NAD announces Blu-ray player

NAD announces Blu-ray player

NAD logoThe latest entry in the high-end Blu-ray market comes from the Canadian manufacturer NAD. Modeled T587, the player will sell for about $1,500.

The T587 is a profile 2.0 player for BD-Live. It does not have multi-channel analog outputs, but does decode all the advanced codecs, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS:HD Master Audio, outputting bitstream or multi-channel PCM over its HDMI 1.3 digital connection.

NAD is also claiming this player will have the fastest load time of any Blu-ray Disc player on the market now at under a minute.

PlayOn now supports Netflix

PlayOn now supports Netflix

PlayOn logoNetflix Watch Now movies are now available through PlayOn, a media server for the Sony Playstation 3.

Media Mall Technologies released their newest version of PlayOn which will integrate with your Netflix Watch Now queue. It also now supports 480p video from Hulu, and Hulu User Queue support.

PlayOn is available as a free trial download for 30 days and a one-time $30 charge for continued use. It installs on your Windows PC and streams YouTube, Hulu and now Netflix video to a networked PS3. I have tried this out and it works pretty good. I would recommend the PC and PS3 be Ethernet connected as a wireless connection tends to make the video drag.

If you have opted in to the new Silverlight media player on Netflix, PlayOn will not work for you.

Get Netflix on your Mac now

Get Netflix on your Mac now

Netflix LogoI told you about Netflix adding support for Mac, now you can enter the beta through an opt-in.

The official Netflix blog links to the opt-in page. Once you opt in you can’t opt out, and not all videos are available for the Silverlight player yet.

Also keep in mind that this player now works with Firefox on your PC.

I installed Silverlight on my Macbook and played some video, it’s relatively quick and the quality is pretty good for this small screen. I’m happy to have Mac support now.

Blu-ray comes to Mac (clones)

Blu-ray comes to Mac (clones)

Psystar logoApple is on the board of directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association, yet they’ve shown ambivalence, or even contempt, for the format. Steve Jobs even said, “Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt.” With the newly launched Macbook lineup some expected Blu-ray to finally be included in an Apple product, but this wasn’t the case.

If you have been waiting for a Blu-ray-enabled Mac, Psystar may have your answer. They have released the first OS X compatible computer to offer Blu-ray Disc support.

Psystar’s president Rudy Pedraza mocked Jobs’ statement about Blu-ray, retorting, “Blu-ray has already won the format war. Not only is there fully functional and mature support for Blu-ray in other operating systems but you can now rent Blu-ray discs from almost any rental chain. Blu-ray has become pervasive technology that is being widely adopted by consumers everywhere.”

Since Mac is used quite often for video editing, it is ridiculous that they don’t offer Blu-ray Disc yet.
