New Verbatim Double Layer DVD’s spotted at Sam’s Club
A new Verbatim DVD+R DL (Double Layer) product has been found online at SamsClub.com. This is the first time that Verbatim Double Layer DVD’s have been available in a 50 count retail packaging. The product is not yet available for sale online and can only be purchased at the physical brick and mortar Sam’s Club stores. No other retail stores are carrying this product yet either, so at the moment it appears to be exclusive to Sam’s Club, at least temporarily.

What is so special about these Verbatim Double Layer DVD’s?
Earlier this year, I posted an article about Verbatim outsourcing DVD Double Layer production to Moser Baer India. This new Verbatim DVD+R DL product at Sam’s Club is rumored to contain the Made in India Double Layer discs. Only this 50 count retail package will contain the made in India product at this point, other Verbatim double layer packages will still use the made in Singapore product. The MID code for these made in India double layer discs will almost certainly remain at MKM001 to ensure maximum compatibility in DVD burners. I take the arrival of these new discs as good news, as it will help to drop the price of quality double layer media.

How will the new double layer discs perform?
Up until now, most of Verbatim’s Double Layer media has been manufactured at their premier recordable media factory located in Singapore. So how will these new made in India double layer discs compare to the tried and true made in Singapore Verbatim media? My prediction is that the quality will be quite acceptable, causing little to no playback problems or burn failures. I also predict that quality scans will reveal that the made in Singapore double layer media is still superior. Burning these made in India double layer DVD’s at a faster speed than their 2.4x rating might also cause some trouble, but we will have to get our hands on the product to perform some tests before any definitive statements can be made. Have you tried this new Verbatim double layer media? If so I would love to hear about your experience with this media in the comments section below.

  1. I haven’t tried these yet, but I have tried out the Made in India single-layer 16x DVD+R discs. I wasn’t too impressed.
